Energetic, passionate and determined are three words that describe 29 year old Alex perfectly. Alex moved from Invercargill late 2016 to start a new life for herself in Hamilton. Alex transferred straight from Accessibility in Southland to Enabling Good Lives.

Since moving to Hamilton, Alex has found a place to live flatting with two other people and a part time job at Nandos, a Portuguese chicken restaurant at the Base in Te Rapa. Alex’s Connector/Tūhono, Bella, has been assisting Alex with making these important community connections. Through their short time working together Bella and Alex have built a great friendship as they work together to make sure Alex can really make the most of this opportunity.

Alex’s brother is the manager of her Enabling Good Lives direct funding, allowing Alex to focus on building her new life in Hamilton. Whilst Friday to Saturday is taken up with work, she uses the rest of the week to spend time with her support worker Cody just hanging out and doing acrylic painting. Alex also enjoys having a couple of drinks with her workmates at Lone Star when she’s got the night off.

When talking with Alex, I could see how proud of herself she was to be achieving so much in a short amount of time. Alex has already has a list of future goals which include increasing her hours at work, being accepted into the Wintec computer course and to get her learners licence.
