IHC advocates for the rights, inclusion and welfare of all people with intellectual disabilities and support them to live enriched and vibrant lives in the community.

IHC also lobby and advocate for the human rights of all people with intellectual disabilities at community, national and international levels.

We raise money and awareness of the issues facing people with intellectual disabilities through our charitable activities, our advocacy programme, social media and other communication channels.

Our charity work includes providing advocacy, information through Australasia’s largest intellectual disability library and friendship and skill-based volunteering.

We employ around 5500 staff and directly support approximately 7000 people with intellectual disabilities around New Zealand through our core funded services.

 IDEA services are part of IHC and include:

Supported Living:

Supporting people who may have flatmates, live with a partner, have children or live alone, to live independently in the community.  Our staff are experienced, trained and will work with you to provide you with choices which will give you flexible support options to best suit the needs of the individual.

Home Support:

Available for anyone who is still living at home with family and wants a one to one relationship with one of our support workers, normally meeting up with you a set number of hours per week.  Our staff will mentor/ coach or buddy up during the hours allocated to you and do whatever it takes to assist each person with the goals that are important for that person.

Evening Social Club for Youth:

This group is for people 16 to 24 years of age.

Run by our most buzzy, vibrant staff who are energetic, passionate and encouraging Youth Workers.

Held weekly on Thursdays 5–7 pm. The venue is:

Woolston,

Christchurch

 Day Time Youth Services:

This group is for people 17 to 27 years of age.

These Day Services’ are run as life skills programmes that assist young people in developing their independence, engaging with their communities, connecting with their peers and learning skills for living and employment this services also provides transition services for school leavers.

We currently run Youth Services in the following areas;

  • Rangiora-  Weekly Mondays 9 am – 3 pm
  • Rolleston- Weekly Tuesdays 9 am – 3 pm
  • Papanui - Weekly Thursdays 9 am – 3 pm

 After School Programmes:

Suitable for children 8 to 13 years of age.

These programmes can be run at 3 different locations throughout Christchurch and in Rangiora.

Our focus is play and playful learning while encouraging new skills and confidence with our Support Workers.

The ratio is one staff supervising 3 children at a time in this programme.
