Disabled People & Whanau
Enabling Good Lives (EGL) is an approach to disability support that offers disabled people and their whanau greater choice and control.
Enabling Good Lives brings together funding from the Ministries of Health, Education and Social Development in a single package. This funding can be used flexibly to help disabled people achieve their future plans, whether they are dreaming of employment, education, training, recreation or connections within the community. We can help disabled people and their families to plan for the life they want to lead. Independent facilitators (also known as navigators, connectors, tuhono) offer guidance as they plan for their future.
This approach includes a Demonstration in Christchurch for school leavers with Ongoing Resourcing Scheme (ORS) funding.
Other support initiatives are being trialed in other parts of New Zealand. These approaches may be an option for families who are not able to take part in Enabling Good Lives during the demonstration phase.
Long-term the Enabling Good Lives support approach may be used as the basis for changing the disability support system in New Zealand.
