How the Enabling Good Lives' principles can guide us in setting up the Regional Leadership Group

Key points from participants:

    • Will enable us to exercise leadership
    • We need to really explore and understand the implications of the principles
    • We need to live the principles – how we think and what we do
    • Active listening is key – there are many points of view
    • Disabled people and families need to lead this – new territory
    • Need to create safe environments
    • Important to connect with the wider community
    • Ideas will evolve

Providers discuss active listening to clients as part of EGL principlesHow we want to select people for the Regional Leadership Group

Key points from participants:

    • Need to be clear about what is required – time and energy commitment
    • A graduated (paced) approach
    • Need a variety of service representatives
    • Invite interested parties to present to the whole group
    • Representatives need credibility and accountability to the wider group of providers
    • There needs to be places where a much wider group of providers can feed into the selected people (representatives)
    • Need to create the space for leaders
    • Service providers will need to have the ability to “release” people for this task
    • A speed-dating approach
    • Representatives need to be connected and open to networks

Agreed next steps

    1. A “Job Description” for this role to be posted on the EGL website by 14th July 2017
    2. Providers to meet and discuss further between now and the 2nd August
    3. Interested people encouraged to attend the New Zealand Disability Support Network / EGL National Leadership Group workshop on the 19th July in Palmerston North
    4. Expressions of interest sought
    5. People who are interested are prepared to present to colleagues on the 2nd August (the next Provider Forum)
    6. A core group of 4 or 5 people selected at the 2nd August forum and the Regional Leadership members will come from this group
